VSTi

Don't miss this one. Even if you've ignored my other posts you really mustn't ignore this one. You probably won't need to buy any analogue VSTi's again.

These instruments are truly breathtaking - simulations of old analogue gear, with GUIs that look a bit like the real thing (I always like my soft synths to look retro) and amazingly rich sounds. I am staggered that these are being given away for nothing: they are definitely commercial standard, I would have actually paid for this collection if it had been for sale.

If you like the sounds of old analogue synths, and like being able to communicate with a synth using just the front panel controllers and not have to go into 5 sub menus, you'll like this set of synths.

Urs Heckmann (known as U-he) is one of the best VSTi developers around at the moment. He wrote some free software including Triple Cheese that you may have tried, and more recently the commercial VSTi Zebra. His free and pay stuff is at http://www.u-he.com/.  He's currently building a new synth concept called "Berlin Modular", which will be a full modular synth on your PC or Mac, and will have individual modules just like a hardware modular system. Everything can be routed to everything. The promise is of a piece of software that will rival the very best original analogue hardware but with much more precision and control. The KVRaudio "Developer Challenge 09" is a competition for non-professional VSTi/VST coders. All the competition entries are freeware, and the entries for the 2009 competition have just been posted online. I downloaded and played with most of the entries yesterday, and I was really surprised by the quality of some of them. If you use computers in your music setup then you must have a look: http://www.kvraudio.com/developer_challenge_2009.php.

Members of the KVR community get to vote on the entries, and the winners receive money and/or prizes, all donated by the community. Donation is via Paypal if you want to add to the prizefund, but you don't have to. You can just enjoy some of the outstanding free software these kind people have produced for the competition. I was particularly impressed with "_02.Circles" and the convolution reverb plugin, but many others look interesting and useful too.  KVRaudio is also a huge resource for freeare plugins (it has a database with download links and reviews) and for synth patches.
